Donna Sue Groves wished to honor her mother, Maxine, and her Appalachian heritage by having a painted quilt hung on her barn in Adams County, Ohio. You may be really surprised to see that they started off as a painted design. I was not familiar with where the idea of a wooden barn quilt came from, so I did a little research. I am now going back to basics and doing a wooden barn quilt wall hanging to use up all the pieces. Lucky for me it worked out great but I had lots of pieces leftover. Instead of trying a small basic design first, I jump straight in and made a kingsize headboard with a unique design. Like most projects I try, I always seem to jump in feet first. We’d love to have you help us celebrate this exciting showpiece which is sure to capture a positive first impression to visitors to our community.Wooden Barn quilts have become so popular on Pinterest at the moment, that I had to join in and have a try. The display is located near the corner of 7th and Meridian in downtown Cozad, Nebraska, on the side of the Mead Lumber storage building, across the street from Bella Italia restaurant. Rose Mapel of Rustic Milling & Craft, LLC was commissioned to paint the barn quilt blocks for the project to maintain uniformity in color and design. Block designs were used from the United States Patchwork Pattern Book: 50 Quilt Blocks from 50 States from Hearth and Home Magazine, with permission by Dover Publications. Each state has an official quilt block, much like a state bird or flower designation that we will be using. The display is 6’ x 50’ with all 50 states represented. This is a unique community art installation located near the corner of 7th and Meridian in downtown cozad, Nebraska. Each year the Foundation presents the Rising Star Award which recognizes an individual, business, or industry whose creation of new activity or expansion of an existing activity promotes the economy and Good Life in Nebraska. The Rising Star Award was created in 1999 to recognize outstanding tourism attractions, public or private, which have made a significant expansion to an existing attraction or has established a new one – thereby adding value to the overall tourism effort of the local area, the region, or the state.Ĭlick HERE to read more information on the Lexington Clipper Herald's Website.Ĭozad Chamber of Commerce Tourism commissioned a 50 State Barn Quilt Display in Cozad. The promotion of tourism and education through this unique trail of local barn quilt destinations is a testimony to your commitment to strengthen your community and the State of Nebraska. The Cozad Tourism Committee was presented the Rising Star Award by the Nebraskland Foundation in recognition and celebration of Nebraska's strong agricultural and quilting heritage. Barn Quilts of Dawson County Recieves the 2021 Rising Star Award from the Nebraskaland Foundation We’d love to have you help us celebrate this exciting showpiece which is sure to capture a positive first impression to visitors to our community. This includes the cost of having the 2’x 3’ block commissioned and painted as well as contributing for installation and maintenance costs. Sponsorships for each of the 50 state blocks are $200.00. It is our hope that this one-of-a-kind piece of art will draw tourists to the area to see their state’s block. The initial expenses have been funded by the Tourism Committee through lodging tax dollars. The Cozad Tourism committee is requesting sponsorships to help support this project.
